GABONESE KOTA RELIQUARY GUARDIAN "BWETE" FIGURE. Kota reliquary guardian figure originating from the tribes of Gabon and the Republic of Congo in Central Africa. These figures, also known as "bwete" or "bwiiti", were used by the Kota people to protect the remains of their ancestors, which were kept in baskets or bundles. The statue is made of wood and covered with metal sheets, brass or copper. - Height: approximately 19 inches.
